As a Vancouver WA Veterinary clinic, Claus Paws sees first hand the need for volunteers throughout the area.
Volunteering makes our community stronger, and volunteering to help pets is a natural start for so many of you. We often get calls from people wondering if they can volunteer with us (the answer is no, unfortunately – our insurance won’t allow it). Since we can’t directly provide volunteer opportunities, we would like to give some starting ideas for both the young volunteer looking to work with animals, and for the adults who want to give time back to animals as our pets have helped us through so many rough spots of our own.
Humane Society/Rescue Groups – So many of our new pet patients are from the SW Washington Humane Society, Furry Friends, Must Love Dogs NW, and other rescue/shelter agencies. If you have a few hours to spend each week, consider contacting a local animal welfare group to see if they can use a dog walker or other help. You might be surprised at the opportunities available to you.
Foster Care – Not looking to add a permanent family member, but willing to help socialize an animal that won’t find a fur-ever home without some TLC? So many shelter animals are simply not themselves when living in a shelter, and it can be hard for them to let their true selves shine. If you have some room and time to spare, consider making a temporary commitment to a new friend in need, to help them get ready for a move to a permanent home.
Sponsor a Pet – call your favorite rescue group and ask what supplies they need. Turn your Super Bowl party into an opportunity to help pets by asking guests to bring these needed items along to donate to the organization. Maybe your employer has a matching donation program for charitable giving – take advantage and double your gift!
We love our pets, and they give us so much love and companionship. If you are looking to add a new spring in your step, volunteering to help animals can boost your day in so many ways. We can’t always afford to donate money, but donating time is a very special gift that makes you feel great, too! As Vancouver Veterinarians and community members, we love to hear your stories about helping pets, and how pets have helped you. Hearing pet success stories makes our days brighter, too!
